Teeth Need Regular TLC: Your Smile Will Thank you!
When was the last time you had dental cleaning? If you’re scratching your head trying to remember, don’t worry– you’re not alone! Many people put off cleanings simply because they don't realize how important they are or life just gets busy! But here’s the truth—regular cleanings do more than just keep your teeth looking great— they help protect your overall health, too.
So, let’s dive into why getting a cleaning and exam every six months is one of the best things you can do for your oral health!
What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?
Have you ever wondered what your dental hygienist is actually doing during your appointment? It’s more than just a quick polish and goes beyond good home hygiene (which, don't get us wrong, is also important!)! Here’s what to expect:
- Plaque & Tartar Removal: Even with the best at-home routine, plaque can build up in hard-to-reach places. If left alone, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by the professionals.
- Polishing & Stain Removal: Love coffee, tea, or red wine? Cleanings help remove surface stains and keep your smile looking bright.
- Gum Health Check: Kiki and Dr. White will check for early signs of gum disease, which is linked to other serious health issues when untreated.
- Fluoride Treatment (Optional): Some cleanings include fluoride to strengthen your enamel and help prevent cavities.
- Personalized Tips: Are you brushing or flossing correctly? Do you ever wonder if there is an easier way to floss your back molars? A dental visit is the perfect time to ask for advice on your at-home routine!
- X-rays & Exam (If Due): If it’s time for your X-rays or exam, we’ll take care of that during your cleaning. Dr. White will review the X-rays to catch any issues that might not be visible during the cleaning, so you stay ahead of anything that could become a problem later.
What Happens During a Dental Exam?
A dental exam isn’t just a quick look at your teeth—it’s a full check-up on your oral health! Here’s what Dr. White is really looking for during your visit:
- Review Findings: Dr. White will go over anything our hygienist, Kiki noticed during your cleaning, like plaque buildup, gum health concerns, bite and tooth issues or any suspicious areas that need extra attention.
- Checking Old Dental Work – Have fillings, crowns, or bridges that seem to be bothering you? Dr. White will check to make sure everything is still doing its job and hasn’t worn down or loosened.
- Cosmetic Smile Check – Thinking about whitening, fixing a chipped tooth, or closing a gap? Dr. White can chat with you about options to enhance your smile.
- Bite & Alignment Check – Do your teeth feel “off” when you bite or you catch yourself grinding at night? Dr. White will check for alignment issues that could lead to jaw pain or wear on your teeth.
- Answering Your Questions – Have concerns about sensitivity, flossing struggles, or anything else? This is the perfect time to ask—Dr. White is happy to help!
Why Are Regular Cleanings and Exams So Important?
Think about this—would you go months (or years!) without cleaning your house? Probably not, because messes pile up fast. The same goes for your teeth! Even if your smile looks fine, skipping cleanings can lead to:
- Cavities & Tooth Decay: Plaque contains bacteria that can eat away at your enamel. Once decay starts, you'll need a filling, or worse, a root canal.
- Gum Disease: Bleeding when you floss? That’s a sign of gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. If it progresses to periodontal disease, it will be irreversible and can lead to gum recession, tooth loss, as well as contribute to heart and memory problems. Periodontal disease is silent.
- Bad Breath: Could your breath be fresher? Cleanings remove odor-causing bacteria for a long–lasting fresh feeling.
- Tooth Stains & Discoloration: Over time, stains from food and drinks settle in, making your teeth appear dull or yellow.
Your dental checkups aren't just about cleaning—they’re also about early detection. Isn’t it better to catch a little problem early instead of dealing with a bigger hassle down the road? Here at White32 Dental, we are all about preserving natural teeth.
How Often Should You Get a Cleaning and Exam?
The American Dental Association recommends a professional cleaning and exam every six months as well as updated x-rays every 6 months. But, if you have gum disease or other dental concerns, you may need cleanings every three to four months. Not sure if you’re overdue? If it’s been longer than a year, it's definitely time to book an appointment!
A Message from Your White32 Hygienist, Kiki
We know that going to the dentist isn’t always at the top of your to-do list, but trust us—your smile is worth it. My son hates going to the dentist and I’m a hygienist! It took him taking a break from going to realize how important it is. Now, it’s not just me, his mom, being “annoying”—he sees it for himself!
It is so normal to come in nervous or unsure. Trust me, we’ve seen everything and without judgement. We look forward to inviting you into a comfortable and welcoming space focused on patient care.
So, when’s the last time you showed your smile some love? Let’s chat!
